Network Services

Network Services

In an unstable world Disaster Recovery is a well known term and is often interpreted as meaning the (fast) restoration of services after a major incident such as the destruction of a building by a fire or terrorist bomb. However in the context of networks a major disaster can often result from something more minor.

For example a fire in a building riser can wipe out the cabling and network equipment leaving the network completely inoperative. Although the building is still habitable and PCs may be usable, users will be unable to work effectively until the network is fully restored. This could take days or weeks to achieve when taking into consideration re-cabling and equipment procurement lead times.

One option is to move users to a disaster recovery site using another building where duplicate systems are available and permanently running. In the above example, which is probably more typical of the type of disasters likely to affect an organisation, this is perhaps excessive and even unnecessary, not withstanding the high costs involved. It is in this area that Computrad can offer alternative and more effective disaster recovery solutions.

Disaster recovery is a means to an end, the end being business continuity which is a more appropriate term. It requires more than a simple relocation of staff and resources, because certain systems may or may not be critical. As IT and Networks have become more integrated, the effects of various disaster scenarios on the numerous business processes requires careful analysis and consideration.

For the best business continuity solutions for the process consists of a number of basic steps.

  • Carry out a business impact analysis
  • Determine solutions
  • Implement the necessary resources to safeguard the business
  • Manage those resources on an ongoing basis
  • Rehearse possible scenarios

Although Computrad can help with the business impact analysis the ultimate responsibility for this must rest with the client. Computrad come into the process at the second stage, where they can propose and implement the most effective solutions to meet the client's needs.

Computrad's Approach

Several levels and grades of service are available, each one designed to meet particular requirements and budgets. Each can be tailored to meet specific needs thereby ensuring the right safeguards are available to cope with the envisaged disaster scenarios.

Common Provisions

The following provisions are common to all levels and grades of service.

  • Computrad will procure and hold the network equipment necessary to ensure that recovery can be achieved
  • The equipment will be held in a secure and safe environment at Computrad ready for shipment to site at any time.
  • Periodically the equipment will be checked and tested to ensure it is fully functional when required.
  • The equipment will be maintained at the same hardware and software revision levels used by the client.
  • In the event of a disaster, the equipment can be immediately shipped to site with the necessary trained field engineers to install, configure and commission the equipment.
  • The network will be fully audited at the initiation of the service contract.

Detailed Provisions

These are always dependant on individual organisation's business needs and are defined as part of the initial consultancy process. For detailed discussions please contact the Computrad Sales Team
