Penetration Testing

Penetration Testing

Penetration testing is a part of computer system security testing in which the test team collects information on the security features inherent in a target system and then attempts to circumvent the security features in order to gain access to the system. Except by agreement with the target system management, penetration testing is essentially unconstrained and may make use of automated tools, live penetration attempts by a test team member posing as a hacker, and any other combination of conventional or unconventional access methods. A penetration test team may be expected to use any information it can gather in order to gain access to the system, including code listings, documentation, manuals, diagrams, or interviews with system personnel. Running an automated tool against a target system for the purpose of collecting information on the target's security features is included in this definition of penetration testing, even though no logon to the target system has occurred. Penetration testing is essentially computer hacking covered by a pre-coordinated set of rules under which the test will be conducted, a pre-established boundary within which the test will be contained, and by an appropriate authorization to proceed with the test. A penetration test ends with a report to the affected line management on the vulnerabilities uncovered by the test, including recommendations to resolve or mitigate these vulnerabilities.
