Many organizations are now accepting that wireless systems can have an important part to play in their IT infrastructure and the market growth in all aspects of the technology is extremely high. The need for wireless solutions is fueled by specific business needs for either mobility in the workforce or for inter building communication at a fraction of the costs of traditional methods. Although the press speculation is that wireless could replace a cabled infrastructure, this is not the case in reality, organizations will provide a mixture of cabled and wireless technologies to best provide a solution to the growing needs of IT users.

Mobility


More organisations, particularly in Education are utilizing 'hot desking' styles of accommodation for their workers or students especially where staff or students normally work from home or are traveling most of the time. The capability for a user to use a wireless connection to the network at an organisation's offices can be an attractive option for these users in addition to the traditional uses of wireless systems for the temporary or difficult to cable situations. IEEE standards now have firm standards for the use of radio contained in 802.11 which all manufacturers now follow. At the sub 3Mbps transmission rates the wireless solutions can be extremely cost effective as long as users needs can be accommodated on a shared 'hub' style basis at these speeds. For users requiring a faster network performance 11Mbps systems are now available, although still working on a shared 'hub' basis there will be soon 'switched' versions available which will prove useful for IP video and IP voice systems.

Inter Building


Where multiple buildings on a campus or in a town centre need to be networked the normal solutions of laying fibre or leasing bandwidth are being effectively challenged by both radio and wireless communications. Radio systems operating at 11Mbps and now 54Mbps and can easily be designed and installed to form the connection. Where greater speeds are required infra red laser systems can provide a protocol free bandwidth at up to 1Gbps and are sometimes referred to as 'fibre in the air'.
